Nylon-string (classical) guitar samples ======================================= The .ogg and .m4a files in this folder are converted from the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios "Musical Instrument Samples" (MIS), Guitar: https://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MISguitar.html Archive: https://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/sound%20files/MIS/Piano_Other/guitar/Guitar.mono.2496.zip Recording: Raimundo 118 classical guitar, played by Brian Penkrot, December 11, 2011, in the anechoic chamber. Earthworks QTC40 microphone at 5 feet, Metric Halo interface. Technicians: Shane Hoose and Zach Zubow. 24-bit, 96 kHz. Terms of use, from https://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MIS.html (checked 2026-09-30): "Since 1997, these recordings have been freely available on this website and may be downloaded and used for any projects, without restrictions." Credit is not required, but we give it gladly: thanks to the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios. Changes: the chromatic runs are split into single notes (scripts/iowa-guitar.mjs), high-passed at 0.7 times the fundamental (50 to 150 Hz) to remove room rumble, hiss above 2.5 kHz faded out of the tails once the note has none left there, each note retuned to within a few cents, resampled to 48 kHz, room noise before the pluck trimmed. The player's dynamics are uneven, so within each note the takes are relabeled pp/mf/ff by loudness, takes more than 9 dB off their neighbours are dropped and takes 6 to 9 dB off are brought to within 3 dB. Takes far from their layer level over the whole guitar are turned up or down (pp within 6 dB, mf and ff within 9 dB), or dropped when turning them up would make their hiss audible. Plucks that did not ring (attack noise with little tone: the level 0.25 to 0.5 s after the pluck 5 dB under the string's typical and under -14 dB, or under -20 dB; or the fall to -40 dB in under 55% of the string's typical time and under 2 s) are dropped. The other layers of the note cover, or the same pitch on another string. Tails cut at -60 dB or 6 s with a 50 ms fade, one gain for the whole set, encoded to Opus and AAC. The pick, dead-string, release and squeak noises (pick-*, dead-*, release-*, squeak-*) are synthesized by scripts/build-samples.mjs and are not part of the source.
